We’re conveniently located in Urubamba—just a 2-minute walk from the main plaza. It’s an easy day trip from Cusco or anywhere in the Sacred Valley.
Rastro Shop was designed with creativity and community in mind. We host workshops with a maximum of six participants, ensuring everyone has ample space to explore, experiment, and create comfortably.
Urubamba is a paradise for sketchers, with something of everything to capture—nature, culture, and daily life. After warming up in the shop, we’ll head out to sketch on location and bring it all to life.

I’m Hsiang. I’ve been sketching for over 15 years alongside my journey as a scientist, using a minimal kit to draw on location in different places. My strangest sketching experience was on a party bus in Minneapolis, sketching a group of tipsy scientists dancing the night away.
Sketching is a way of solving problems and experimenting on paper—often spontaneous, with less planning and more curiosity. When we sketch inside a sketchbook, it becomes sketchbooking: a practice where each page connects to the next, building a visual story over time. Unlike sketching on loose sheets, a sketchbook holds everything together, turning scattered ideas into a meaningful creative journey. Though one might dislike some of the pages, as a whole it always brings magic to the reader. For others, a piece of art is often a painting; for us sketchers, our art is the whole sketchbook.
The goal of this workshop is to help you build a lasting sketchbooking habit—one that encourages you to draw every day. We begin with a lecture that lays out a practical roadmap for developing this habit with ease and joy. You'll then explore tools and techniques designed to help you navigate common challenges in sketching. Surrounded by Urubamba’s natural beauty and rich culture, we’ll head outdoors to sketch on location. By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a confident mindset, ready to practice sketching as part of your everyday rhythm.
Everyone can draw, so this workshop is open to all. While materials are tailored for beginners, experienced sketchers will also gain fresh insight from our science-based approach.
You’ll have the chance to try out different tools and materials, helping you discover what feels right when building your own kit. We’ll explore line and wash sketching with graphite, fountain pen, and watercolor—and there will be colored pencils, acrylic markers, and fineliners available to play with too.
We won’t be using sketchbooks during the workshop—there are just too many styles out there, and everyone has their own taste. Instead, I’ll bring a variety of papers for you to try, so you can figure out what fits your flow before investing in a sketchbook
The workshop runs for 3 hours and 30 minutes. We start with a 40-minute lecture to build the mindset for observational sketching, followed by 60 minutes of hands-on drills to practice techniques. After a 10-minute stretch break, we head outside for about an hour of on-location sketching. We then return to the shop for a final 40 minutes to share our work, reflect on the process, and summarize key takeaways
